The Bonny Doon Winery is dedicated to producing wines with a minimal amount of human interference. Instead of creating the winemaker's "vision" of what the wine should taste like, they put particular emphasis on California's terroir and allow the land to have the most influence on the final product. Vin Gris de Cigare is the rose version of Bonny Doon's flagship wine, Le Cigare Volant, which literally translates to "The Flying Cigar". This name mocks the Chateauneuf-du-Pape winemakers, who in 1954 had an ordinance passed to prevent flying saucers from flying over or landing near their vineyards. Furthermore, any flying saucers that disregarded the ordinance would be impounded!
Utilizing prominent Southern French varietals, this rose is composed of 44% Grenache, 20% Grenache Blanc, 13% Carignane, 10% Mourvedre, 7% Cinsault and 6% Roussanne. Light aromas of wild strawberry, white cherry and appleblossom lead to a dry, zesty palate with flavors of red fruit, blood orange and citrus.
