Vara y Pulgar is created from 100% Tintilla. This is one of the most rare grape varieties of Southwestern Spain. The Tintilla grape was cultivated in Jerez for many centuries. However, along with many other varieties Tintilla was also disappeared after the phylloxera epidemic in the early 20th century. Winemaker Alberto Orte has recovered a few cuttings from abandoned vineyards that managed to survive phylloxera and after many years of work has managed to produce the first bottles of 100% Tintilla still (dry) wine in over a century.
Created from 100% Tintilla from vines planted in 1993 on Albariza soil at 197 ft elevation, Vara y Pulgar Tintilla is aged for a total of 19 months. The first 12 months in 40% oak vat and 60% concrete tank of 6,000 Lit followed by an additional 8 months in French oak barrels of 225 Liter. The result is a bright purple colored wine with a fragrant nose of blackberry, dark chocolate, minerals, with a hint of licorice. The full-bodied palate is dense with concentrated aromas of red and dark berries, violet, cracked pepper and bitter chocolate. A strong mineral lift and firm tannins leads to the long, aromatic finish. Pairs great with roast lamb, spicy sausage or charcuterie in a supporting role.
