Founded in 2010 Union Horse is an upstart Kansas City distillery that is family-owned and operated by the Garcia siblings. Focusing on craft whiskies, Union Horse buys its grain from local farmers and mills it at the distillery, giving them much better control over their grain. Made from a mash of 80% corn and 20% rye, Dark Horse Reserve Bourbon is fermented over 5 to 7 days employing the classic sour mash method. This Bourbon is gently distilled in a 500-gallon copper hybrid still named Chester Copperpot, before being matured in new Missouri Oak barrels for up to 5 years. Dark Horse whiskies are not charcoal-filtered and no artificial coloring or flavoring agents are used.
Union Horse Distillery Reserve Bourbon Whiskey has a warming aroma of maple, cedar and roasted nuts. The bourbon is full-bodied, with notes of caramel, honey and smoke on the palate leading to a lasting finish with touches of buttered bread, creamy vanilla and nuts.
"Despite the rich brown sugar and vanilla aroma, this whiskey is relatively lean and austere, featuring plenty of oak up front, leather midpalate and finishing long with plenty of tingly spice. Good sipper." - Wine Enthusiast
