92 Points - James Suckling
At 39 degrees latitude, Bodega Noemia is one of the southernmost wineries in the world. This region has a history of glaciers and limestone rich bedrock. Flowing from the Andes, the Limay and Neuquen rivers bring mineral-rich water to this arid zone. A desert climate at heart, a large thermal amplitude graces the property, and the Andes bestow constant winds on the area. Combined, these factors create an environment that is ideal for making mineral-rich wines with vibrant hints of fruit. The grapes are picked by hand in the very early morning and brought directly to the winery. In the afternoon, each single bunch is controlled, cleaned and the bunches are destalked berry by berry by hand thus keeping only the good grapes for the wine making.
The fermentation is left to start with its natural yeasts, no sulphur or other kind of chemicals are added, and two pigeages a day are performed. The fermentation lasts for 3 weeks at an average 78.8 degrees F (26 ºC). There is no pumping over, pumps are not used at Bodega Noemia! Once the alcoholic fermentation is completed, the must is decanted by gravity into a mix of cement and stainless steel tanks and new and used French Radoux barrels of the tightest and finest grain possible, thus minimizing micro oxidation and avoiding over-woodiness. The bottling is also performed by gravity and without any filtering. The wine never sees a machine, at Bodega Noemia, everything is handmade.
Crafted from 90% Malbec and 10% Merlot and separately aged for nine months in oak barrels, cement and stainless steel tanks and then blended together, Bodega Noemia "A Lisa" Malbec is dense violet and plum in color offering aromas of dark berries, cherry, cocoa and spice on the nose. The medium bodied, balanced palate offers persistent tannins with notes of dark fruit, cassis, smoked meat and white pepper.
“Aromas of cool earth, dried mushroom, and dark fruits follow through to a full-body, tight tannins, and savory finish. Drink now.” -James Suckling
