One of the original founders of the Madeira wine trade, the Blandy family still owns and manages their wine company after almost 200 years. Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Madeira was aged in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional "Canteiro" system, whereby the casks of wine are gradually transferred from the warm top floors of the lodge through the building until it reaches the cool ground floor. The wine had originally been set aside for a vintage release after 20 years of aging, however Blandy's winemaking team was so impressed with the quality that they prepared a special limited bottling to be enjoyed now.
Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Madeira 1996 offers enticing aromas of dried fruit, toffee and dark chocolate. Notes of vanilla, oak, toasted almond and honey appear on the sweet, full bodied palate and linger through the long finish. It is an excellent accompaniment to cakes, fruit, chocolate, pralines and rich cheeses.
