Once a popular spirit in the United States, rye whiskey was a key ingredient in numerous classic cocktails including The Manhattan, The Whiskey Sour, The Sazerac, and The Old Fashioned. This was changed by Prohibition, and by the time the law was repealed, the market had suffered greatly. However, due to the resurgence of cocktail culture, many brands of rye whiskey such as Rittenhouse, Templeton and Sazerac Rye have become increasingly popular. 94 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Angel's Envy Rye Whiskey spends up to 18 months finishing in Franco Caribbean rum casks, resulting in an immensely complex whiskey. The mingling of raw, spicy and earthy rye with the mellow sweetness of rum finishing creates in an amazingly smooth and drinkable rye, even at 100 proof.
This honey-hued rye has remarkable aromas of citrus, caramel candy, maple sugar, hazelnut and spice. The same luscious flavors show up on the palate, rich and sweet, leading into a long, pleasing finish accompanied by the taste of sweet rum sherry wood and soft oak.

This standby rye is excellent in cocktails, but good enough for the hearty to drink straight. Wild Turkey Rye is powerful yet complex, with bold aromas of tea, honey, vanilla and rye. The palate is spicy and just a little sweet, with a touch of vanilla and honey balancing bold rye spice.

Crafted in small batches from a mashbill of 70% rye, 20% corn and 10% malted barley, Few Spirits Rye Whiskey offers a fruit forward nose with aromas of apple, pear and plum complemented by hints of anise and spice. The palate is aligned with nose with added notes of dry grain, tarragon, green banana and candied orange peel. Hint of oak, spice and apple tart lingers through the long finish.

Filibuster Rye Whiskey is a young, spicy rye which has been blended with a small amount of aged bourbon, then matured in white wine-seasoned French oak casks. The resulting spirit offers an intriguing nose of dried fruit, creamy vanilla and toffee which merges with bold, peppery spice on the palate. A delicate herbal note emerges on the long, spicy finish.

McKenzie Rye Whiskey is made from the finest ingrediants and distilled using traditional techniques. Hand-made and unchillfiltered, this rye has rich, complex flavors of gingerbread and spice with a smooth finish.

George Dickel Rye Whisky High West Double Rye Whiskey High West Distillery "The 36th Vote" Barreled Manhattan

Matured for five years, George Dickel Rye Whisky boasts aromas of cinnamon, rye, vanilla and oak, accented by hints of cherry and baked apple. The palate opens with soft notes of caramel, toffee and baking spice which are quickly joined by bold flavors of oak and spicy rye. This intensity carries through to the finish, where it merges with lingering notes of caramel and orchard fruit.

90 Points - Whisky Advocate
Named a "must-try for rye whiskey aficionados" by John Hansell of Whisky Advocate, High West Double Rye Whiskey is the combination of two straight rye whiskeys - a bold, peppery two year old and a smooth, refined sixteen year old. Both the nose and palate open strong and spicy, but soon give way to complex notes of mint, clove, cinnamon, licorice root, pine nuts and dark chocolate. A surprising note of gin botanicals merges with an undercurrent of caramel, vanilla and sweet corn on the finish.

While many of the cocktail-in-a-bottle products leave much to be desired, High West Distillery's "The 36th Vote" Barreled Manhattan is certainly an exception. High West has created their Manhattan following the authentic pre-Prohibition recipe, and then aged the mixture in the rye whiskey's American white oak barrel for 90 days. The time spent in oak allows the spiciness of the rye to fully integrate with the sweet, herbal flavors of the vermouth and the complexity of the bitters - a result that can not be achieved by making the cocktail from scratch.
