Established more than eighty years ago, Vina 1924 is one of the original Malbec vineyards of the Vistalba Valley. The 20 hectare vineyard is located at 980 meters (3,200 feet) above sea level having a thermal amplitude between day and night of about 15°C. Although the company first began by selling their harvests to noted Mendoza wineries, they started building their own facilities in 2006, releasing their first vintage in 2007. They maintain a plant density of at least 7000 per hectare. The high plant density allows having fewer clusters per plant resulting in higher concentration of aromas and flavors in each cluster.
Vina 1924 De Angeles Malbec is an elegant, concentrated red with complex aromas of red berry, plum, licorice, violet and leather. The palate opens with soft, sweet fruit notes which gain depth and intensity as they merge with fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is subtle, savory and long with a restrained sweetness and hints of vanilla and mineral.
"The 2013 Malbec Viña 1924 is a wild, aromatic and perfumed red reminiscent of a northern Rhône because of it strong violet and smoked meat aromas, coupled with something earthy and a fresh touch in the shape of orange blood skin. It's really attractive and captivating, the spirity juice of an old vineyard planted in 1924 in Vistalba produced with minimal intervention and very judicious oak. They use a specific plot, what they call plot number three, which has a soil rich in lime and some stones. In the 2016 vintage they have, for the first time, fermented the lime and the stonier parts together and have bottled 300 unoaked bottles of each part to see how the wine develops. The freshness of 2013 comes through, and so does the intensity and harmony of the old vines. It's terribly balanced and fresh, with ultra-fine tannins. Simply delicious. This is a lot fresher and more elegant than the wines I had previously tasted. Here they have managed to combine the silkiness of the tannins, which is in a way the house's signature, and the freshness and perfume provided by the natural conditions of the vintage. 14,128 bottles were filled in March 2014. - Wine Advocate
