In the 18th and 19th centuries, Madeira was the United States' most prestigious wine, and many prominent families built sizable collections for long-term aging. In the late 1800s, successive plagues of Oidium and Phylloxera devastated Madeira production and the tradition drifted into obscurity. The Rare Wine Company, along with Vinhos Barbeito, created The Historic Madeira Series in order to reintroduce Madeira to the general public and bring them quality products that reflect the style and complexity of the great vintage wines. To emphasize America's deep historical connection to Madeira, each wine in the series is named for a U.S. city where it was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Each bottle bears an early engraving from the chosen city, along with a back label describing America's special link to Madeira's illustrious history.
New Orleans Special Reserve was released in 2007 to raise funds and awareness for post-Katrina cultural activities in New Orleans. It is based on the rare Terrantez grape, which produces a style of Madeira that was prized in New Orleans. Made from a blend of old Tinta Negra Mole and Terrantez, this very limited bottling is rich, tangy, and relatively dry. It makes a wonderful aperitif and is superb with soups, cheeses, and many other foods.
