Marteau Absinthe de la Belle Epoque is a faithful reproduction of the finest 19th Century absinthes; made only with the finest grape spirit and whole botanicals, Marteau embodies the true historical character of the spirit. These botanicals--Grande Wormwood, Anise, Fennel, Angelica, Iris, Petite Wormwood, and Melissa--lend color, complex flavor, and a beautiful, opalescent louche. Marteau was created and developed by renowned absinthe specialist Gwydion Stone, the founder of The Wormwood Society. Dedicated to absinthe education, Stone has studied 18th and 19th century distilling texts and recipes, and has had the unique opportunity to sample pre-ban absinthes. Faced with a market saturated by imitations and substandard bottlings, he was uniquely qualified to create a truly fine traditional absinthe. Stone personally distills Marteau at the House Spirits Distillery, the home of Aviation Gin and Krogstad Aquavit. When you buy six bottles (select "additional 5 bottles" under accessories), your purchase will arrive in a wooden case. Glass and spoon not included. While Marteau is excellent in a traditional serve, it also makes an great cocktail component. Stone has provided one of his favorite recipes using his absinthe: Mephisto The Mephisto is a prime example of a classic-style cocktail that exemplifies the blending capability of Marteau absinthe. Somewhere between a Smoky Martini and a Perfect* Martini, the aptly-named Mephisto is subtle, mysterious and elegant. The absinthe and Scotch flavors are there, but hide in the shadows, just out of reach. Their mystery ties the cocktail together with whispers of fairy. 2 1/2 oz dry gin 1/2 oz sweet vermouth 1/2 oz dry vermouth 2 dashes orange bitters 1 barspoon each: Marteau absinthe, simple syrup and Scotch whisky (I generally use Laphroaig, but some people get kind of heavy with it.) Stir all in well-iced tumbler, strain into chilled cocktail glass, garnish with lemon twist. * A "Dry Martini" calls for only dry vermouth, hence the name; a Perfect Martini calls for equal parts dry and sweet vermouth. I guess I'm in the minority here October 2, 2009 Reviewer: Anonymous Person   I was extremely disappointed by this offering.  There was a very distracting taste in there I can only describe as metallic.  It was so distracting that I couldn't really focus on much else.  This is a perfect example of why one must try a product themselves instead of taking the word of others as gospel.  I know that some have motives for giving favorable reviews of certain products.  I give it 2 stars because I know it's a quality product, though I personally find it undrinkable. 4-5 stars depending on taste July 1, 2009 Reviewer: Chris Clady from Portland, OR United States   Hate saying I find this less steller then everyone else. Obviously this product is the result of hard dedicated work & research. I prefer something where the wormwood flavor is more pronounced, maybe something a little more standard. This is very nice, but just not my personal favorite. I've seen prettyier louche in other brands, but what counts is effect & taste. However, I found this one more appealing with a little added sugar. This one has complexity!  The mintyness does not come across as mouthwashy. I would consider this the most versatile brand I have had, as with varying the amount of water or sugar different  flavors become more apparent, making this a  very fun one to explore. This one costs  more, but goes farther too.I'd reccomend trying this,particularly to those who may not like absinthe. Was this review helpful to you?
