This highly praised la bleue is crafted by hand in Couvet, the 18th century Swiss birthplace of absinthe, and it has long been a favorite of international absinthe lovers. Created by renowned distiller Claude-Alain Bugnon and based on a 1935 recipe, the name reflects its "moonshine" heritage. Mr. Bugnon was one of many home distillers keeping the Val-de-Travers absinthe tradition alive in spite of the ban; La Clandestine started as a hobby in his cellar. Americans could sometimes acquire a rare smuggled bottle of "Clandestine La Bleue." Later, following legalization, he became the first underground distiller to receive an official production license.

A testament to mastery of his craft, La Clandestine's distiller has since been awarded three consecutive Golden Spoon Awards at the Pontarlier Absinthiades. La Clandestine was also awarded a Gold Medal at Distiswiss, a competition for all Swiss spirits. Turning a beautiful milky white when water is added, La Clandestine marries the rich flavor of anise and fennel with the slight bitterness of wormwood. Several local botanicals add additional aromatics to this refreshing spirit. It's delicate complexity makes this absinthe ideal for enjoying both with chilled water and mixed in classic cocktails.

A good starter March 21, 2009
Reviewer: Akurei from walnut creek, CA United States
I ordered this for my wife who was a new comer to absinthe.  It is a bit lighter than the rest, allowing it to be more subtle than the green versions.

It is very tasty too.  Definitely worth the money.

Better than Kubler, however... January 29, 2009
Reviewer: Anonymous Person
There is more depth to this La Bleue than there is in Kubler.  There is a subtle floral bouquet in there and some citrus notes.  The wormwood is also more detectable.  Still, it doesn't approach the depth in a good verte, and for this price... no thank you.

I gave the Kubler a bonus point for it's value.  This product loses one.  If it was priced similarly to Kubler, it scores a "4".

The current measuring stick of la bleue absinthes! December 25, 2008
Reviewer: Benjamin Lopez from The Absinthe Review Network
Exceptional floral bouquet, plenty of lively fennel, a tour de force of delicate, but masterfully balanced character.
