Made in the small Spanish fishing town of Vilanova, just outside the city of Barcelona, Gin Mare epitomizes the Mediterranean spirit. The pot still used to create Gin Mare is housed in a chapel, in a property that was once a monk’s retreat. Back in 1950’s this property was purchased by the Giro Ribot family to house it’s growing business. The Ribot family has been in the wine and spirits business since 1835 and in the late 1900, grandsons Mark and Manuel Jr wanted to assert their own ideas for a new gin and create a new type of gin, inspired by the Mediterranean climate and using locally sourced botanicals. Finally in 2007 the development of a new gin began in collaboration with Global Premium Brands.
Alongside ‘traditional’ botanicals, Mare Mediterranean Gin is created with four principal botanicals: basil, thyme, rosemary and Arbequina olive. They also use a custom blend of citrus, i.e. sweet and bitter oranges from Seville and Valencia and lemons from Lleida. Most of the botanicals are macerated separately for around 36 hours and then individually distilled in their 250 liter Florentine still. Once all the different distillations have taken place, they are blended together with more neutral spirit and water to create Gin Mare. The result is a robust, rich, flavorful spirit that will mix beautifully in modern and classic cocktails.
