At the beginning of the 16th Century, in a Dominican monastery, the recipe of "Zadar liquour" was created by the apothecaries. Later on this liqueur would be known as Maraschino, as it was produced from the ripe fruits of the Dalmation cherry marasca. When Croatia started to industrially produce liqueurs, Maraska Marachino was shipped into every available port, allowing the product to spread through Europe. It gained popularity because it was thought to prevent diseases and cure illnesses. Unfortunately, it does not possess any miraculous healing qualities, but we'll just have to settle for a delicious cocktail!
