89 Points - International Wine Cellar
Los Vascos is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, which is vinified from the fruit of ungrafted pre-phylloxera Bordeaux rootstock. Their Reserve is based on this excellent fruit from the oldest vines on the estate, and is blended with 20% Carmenere, 10% Syrah, and 5% Malbec. The result is an intense ruby red wine with generous fruit: from the Cabernet, black cherry and blackcurrant; from the Malbec, ripe strawberry; from the Syrah, bright raspberry; from the Carmenere, plum, mint and black pepper. Artful oak aging lends complexity with integrated aromas of tobacco, cinnamon, vanilla, caramel, and chocolate.
Previous vintages have been labeled as Cabernet Sauvignon, but Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) has always added small amounts of Carmenere, Syrah, and Malbec to lend texture and balance in a Bordeaux-inspired red.
