Distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2012, Lagavulin "Distillers Edition" is a rich, full-flavored whisky which has been subjected to a secondary maturation in Pedro-Ximenez casks - one of the few finishes that could stand up to the powerful, phenolic, peaty character of this classic single malt. The result is a whisky of striking complexity, melding sulfurous marine notes with unctuous PX sweetness. A nose of intense peat is accented by vanilla, raisin, iodine and malt. The rich, full-bodied palate displays flavors of grassy malt, sea salt, coffee, vanilla and fruit, embedded in powerful peat smoke. Hints of fruit, oak and spice linger through the long, smoky finish.
