GAIA Wines was founded in 1994 by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos (Agriculturist and PhD in Enology from the University of Bordeaux II) and Leon Karatsalos (Agriculturist). They own two modern wineries that are located in two of the most interesting and promising P.D.O. areas of Greece, Nemea in Peloponnese and Santorini. Gaia’s main aim is to present the potential of the indigenous Greek grape varieties to the wine enthusiasts worldwide. The Nemea winery was built in 1997 at the heart of their private vineyard of 7ha in Koutsi village of Nemea P.D.O. zone, at an altitude of 550m. Koutsi is a semi-mountainous village surrounded by vineyards known for their chalky soils and good drainage. The cool temperatures, the ideal sun exposure and the steep inclination of the vineyards give lower yields than other parts of Nemea, extending Agiorgitiko grapes cultivated in Koutsi higher quality than the rest zone of Nemea and are ideal for producing high-extract and oak aged wines.
Produced in extremely limited quantities, Gaia Estate Nemea Agiorgitiko is a well structured wine with intense ripe fruit aromas and well integrated oak flavors. After fermentation, this Agorgitiko is aged for 12 months in French oak casks, and then bottled without chilling or filtration. The results is a bold, ripe and age-worthy red that pairs extremely well with red meat dishes that are rich, intense and spicy.
