Foundry Vineyards started its operation in 1998 when Mark Anderson planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes on 3.5 acres on his residential property. They have certainly come a long way since then. Initially, most of the grapes were sourced out to other Walla Walla wineries, but in 2003 Mark decided to hold back some of the fruit to create a small amount of wine that would commemorate the work of his clients at the Walla Walla Foundry. The inaugural vintage, a blend of Cabernet and Merlot grapes from their estate, Stonemarker Vineyard, featured label artwork by renowned artist Jim Dine. This wine was the basis for their flagship Artisan Blend. Foundry Vineyards is built on the foundation of the combination of art and wine and the founders Mark and Patty Anderson are still focused their vision on formulating a unique experience, which expands the dialog about the creative processes that underlie the making of art and wine. There is a distinct aesthetic to each aspect of the winery from the art driven Artisan labels and the gallery-like tasting room to the spare, urban feel of the adjacent contemporary sculpture garden. Their award winning wines are forged with a combination of their estate grown fruit and small lot production. Each hand crafted wine is overseen from the vine to the bottle and rigorously selected from their best lots. This procedure allows the wines to mature to their full potential and showcases their philosophy of quality over quantity.
Crafted from 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 9% Petit Verdot, Foundry Vineyards "Artisan" Blend opens with enticing aromas of cassis berries and buds, dark black raspberry and graphite with subtle undertones of clove, chocolate, cedar and cherry. The full-bodied palate offers silky tannin and balanced acidity with well integrated oak and lingering aromas of cassis and raspberry.
"More classic in style, with fresher acids, the 2010 Artisan Blend is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot that spent 24 months in 60% new French oak. Black currants, underbrush, cedar, earth and some herbal/minty notes are just some of the nuances here, and this medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and rich effort has fine tannin, integrated acidity and solid overall balance. Drink it over the coming decade. " - Wine Advocate
"Dense and focused, not heavy but vibrant, offering blackberry, licorice and smoke flavors that persist impressively. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2015 through 2018. 275 cases made." - Wine Spectator
