The apple inside of Pomme Prisonniere was grown inside of the decanter and lends further flavor and aroma to this fine spirit. The apple will last indefinitely as long as it is covered in Calvados.
According to the producer, farms in Normandy traditionally kept a carafe containing a pear preserved in Calvados. It was a matter of pride for the master of the house who had managed to grow the pear in the flask, and it never failed to arouse the curiosity of visitors. Just a few miles from the Fiefs Sainte-Anne distillery, the creators of Pomme Prisionniere met a fruit grower whose family had kept the tradition alive
through four generations, imprisoning pears in carafes for the pleasure of a few privileged friends.
Together, they decided to give new life to this old Normandy tradition and produce an Imprisoned Apple. However, if growing a large pear in a bottle is already a difficult exercise requiring considerable experience, encouraging an apple to develop and grow in a bottle is almost impossible.
Apple trees flower abundantly; thousands of flowers give birth to thousands of fruits, but only 5% of
the fruit embryos become apples. The others just fall from the tree. Despite a high failure rate, there are limited number of "Imprisoned Apples" offered every year for sale.
