The apple inside of Pomme Prisonniere was grown inside of the decanter and lends further flavor and aroma to this fine spirit. The apple will last indefinitely as long as it is covered in Calvados.

According to the producer, farms in Normandy traditionally kept a carafe containing a pear preserved in Calvados. It was a matter of pride for the master of the house who had managed to grow the pear in the flask, and it never failed to arouse the curiosity of visitors. Just a few miles from the Fiefs Sainte-Anne distillery, the creators of Pomme Prisionniere met a fruit grower whose family had kept the tradition alive through four generations, imprisoning pears in carafes for the pleasure of a few privileged friends. Together, they decided to give new life to this old Normandy tradition and produce an Imprisoned Apple. However, if growing a large pear in a bottle is already a difficult exercise requiring considerable experience, encouraging an apple to develop and grow in a bottle is almost impossible.

Apple trees flower abundantly; thousands of flowers give birth to thousands of fruits, but only 5% of the fruit embryos become apples. The others just fall from the tree. Despite a high failure rate, there are limited number of "Imprisoned Apples" offered every year for sale.

Worst corked bottle ever June 4, 2012

This review concerns only what should be a side issue, the cork on the bottle. A layer of hard black wax covers the cork, which must be shattered and picked out before the cork can be extracted. Inevitably some of the wax falls inside the bottle.
Then one must pour out the calvados into a container, hoping that the wax comes out too. It does not entirely do so, so the wasteful process must be eliminated. That said, the calvados is fine. Just the cork is terrible.

Beautiful, well-rounded Calvados. The apple inside provides a mild intensification of the natural apple aromas and adds a touch of sweetness. Very pleasant.
