90 Points - James Suckling
Fattoria Del Cerro was founded in 1922 by the Baiocchi family and the estate quickly became an established part of the Montepulciano wine making community. Back in 1978 it was acquired by Saiagricola and emerged from this transitional period as one of the foremost producers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Today, the estate is comprised of 1,485 acres of land. In addition to olive groves, wooded areas and fields, there are 230 acres of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano vineyards, 90 acres of Rosso di Montepulciano vineyards, 50 acres of Chianti Colli Senesi vineyards and 52 acres of other varietal vineyards. The state-of-the-art winery produces 850,000 bottles of wine every year.
Fattoria Del Cerro Rosso di Montepulciano is a blend of Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and Mammolo, from a vineyard of Pliocene origin with mostly clay with stones and shells on the soil. The wine went through alcoholic fermentation for 5-7 days, followed by another eight days of fermentation on the skins. 70% of the wine aged in Slavonian oak casks for six months and 30% ages in French oak barriques for six months. The wine is bottle refined for three months. The result is a vivid ruby red colored wine with intense aromas of wild black cherry, violet and a subtle vanilla undertone on the nose. The full-bodied palate is elegant and well balanced with robust tannins. Pair it with first course dishes with meat sauces, stuffed pasta or casserole dishes and grilled red meats.
"Lots of cherry and berry character. Full body, velvety tannins and a savory finish. Shows beauty from the vintage. Drink now." - James Suckling
