Rhum Agricole is a unique rum that accounts for only a small percentage of worldwide production. The labor-intensive process requires a close proximity to the sugar cane fields, as it is made only from fresh can juice rather than sugar byproducts like molasses. While this adds greater difficulty, complexity, and reliance on harvest schedules, the reward undoubtedly outweighs the challenges: at its best, Rhum Agricole is a stunning expression of the fresh, complex character of the sugar cane that larger-scale rum producers can’t hope to match.
Depaz Amber is a spectacular introduction to this coveted category, as it is the ideal combination of extremely high quality and moderate price. Established in 1651, Depaz makes their rhums from blue sugar cane in the coastal city of St. Pierre. Adherence to exacting standards of production and quality have earned Depaz an appellation d’origine controlee designation.
Centuries of experience shine through in the enticing character of this spirit, which is remarkably complex and dimensional. A warm straw color, Depaz invites with earthy aromas of brown sugar, sweet spice, cracked pepper, grass, hibiscus, and a touch of honey.
The palate is rich and concentrated yet smooth, with flavors of fresh herbs, flower petals, nutmeg, banana, toffee, marzipan, orange, grapefruit, and fresh sugar cane. A subtle smoky character appears on the finish. Depaz makes an excellent sipping rum, but is versatile enough for mixing in just about any rum-based cocktail.
