Bodegas Castano was established by Ramon Castano Santa in 1950, but did not bottle their own wines until 1980. Located in the small town of Yecla, the winery focuses mostly on the vinification of Monastrell, an indigenous grape that is perfectly adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region. This was considered rather adventurous in the conservative wine world of Yecla, since Monastrell was sold in bulk for use in inexpensive table wines. However, Bodegas Castano focused entirely on quality and experimented with Monastrell to create both single varietal bottlings as well as blends.

An excellent value, Bodegas Castano Monastrell is expertly crafted from the fruit of 30 year old vines. Bold notes of rope blueberry, raspberry and plum appear on both the nose and palate, and are complemented by hints of dark chocolate and rich earth on the finish.
