In 1923 a doctor named Vincente Alvarez-Villamil purchased land on the eastern edge of Spain's Sierra de Gredos mountains with the intention of starting a winery. He named the property Bernabeleva, or "the bear's forest", because the site displayed relics of its Celtic past - ancient bears carved from boulders to mark the forests dedicated to the goddess of the hunt. However, in 1936 the Spanish Civil War began and although the family was able to retain the land, no wine was produced. In 2006, two of Vincente's great-grandchildren, Juan Diez Bulnes and Santiago Matallana Bulnes, returned to the land to fulfill their ancestor's dream.

Bernabeleva "Camino de Navaherreros" Garnacha is an excellent value, bursting with fresh, vibrant aromas of strawberry, raspberry, blood orange and white flowers. Reminiscent of a pinot noir, the light-bodied palate offers elegant red fruit flavors, accentuated by hints of spice and mineral which linger through the lasting finish.
