Founded in 1878, and ceasing operation in 1974, the house of A. Edmond Audry is "the best Cognac you have never heard of," and "difficult to find in the U.S. but worth the extra legwork" according to Time Magazine (Oct. 30, 2005). The brand was reestablished in in the late 1970s by the founder's great-great-grandson, relying on old stocks from the distillery. These are spirits of remarkable depth and complexity, and are absolute must-tries for any cognac connoisseur.

A. Edmond Audry Reserve Speciale was blended in 1994 from equal parts Grandes and Petites Champagnes from vintages as old as 1978. After blending, the spirit was transferred to used barrels from very old cognac, allowing for further, gentler maturation. The oak is extraordinarily well integrated, lending mature aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. There's a hint of rancio amongst caramel, wildflower, and white fruit on the palate. This bottling "has a lot going for it including the fair price," according to F. Paul Pacult.
