Description

Founded in 1831, Destilerías Acha has long been at the forefront of distillation in the Basque Country. The small distillery is located in Amurrio, 50km from the Cantabrian Sea. Today, five generations later, Gabriel Acha maintains the traditions and recipes passed down by his ancestors for the distillation of pacharán and creation of vermouths, all of which are made with natural ingredients.

Popular in the Middle Ages, Pacharan was a liqueur made from blackthorn, or sloe, berries with ancient roots in the Basque Country. Atxa Sierra de Orduna Pacharan uses a 150 year old family recipe. Local sloe berries are hand-picked from the Sierra de Orduna hills and then macerated with a triple-distilled spirit. Another batch of this alcohol is used to macerate three types of anise and then redistilled in 130-year-old copper pot stills. Finally, these two batch of spirits are blended together with sugar and alcohol to create Sierra de Orduna Pacharan. A powerful, intense red, this liqueur is fruit-forward and sweet with a light undertone of anise. The palate is soft and velvety and the finish is long with balanced tannins.

A Wonderful Surprise June 4, 2014
Reviewer: T. McL. from Orchard Park, NY United States
This is a mild liquer that I think might make a great addition to anyone's cabinet. It's not strong, only 25 proof. The smell of it is truly earthy, almost the smell of Spring in the woods. Yet the flavor is very fruity, bright, and complex. It's a bit sweet, but to that end serves as an excellent component in mixed drinks replacing Chambord and other fruit-forward mixers. Our favorite way to enjoy it is with a bit of ice but otherwise straight. It's a great sipper.

With such an interesting history, I just had to give it a shot and I'm glad that I did. Thanks DrinkUpNY for putting it out there and making it easy to take a shot!
