Kweichow Moutai Baijiu (aka Maotai) is the most popular spirit in China with a rich history. During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Moutai became the first Chinese liquor to be produced in large-scale production with an annual volume of 170 tons. Moutai is named after a town in Guizhou Province, where wine making has a very long history. China's prime minister Zhou Enlai served Moutai to entertain president Richard Nixon during the state banquet for the US president's visit to China in 1972. It was also served at the meeting between President Obama and the current President of China, Xi Jin Ping in California, June 2013.
